When David Mamet’s play American Buffalo opened in 1975, audiences reeled. Ripped from America’s raw underbelly, ripe with obscenities, the story of three friends in a world of low-lifes, American Buffalo changed the landscape of American drama. Mamet’s raging, hopeless characters — Donny, the owner of a junk store, Bobby, a spaced out loser, and Teacher, a dangerous bully — are hoping to lift valuable coins from a local dealer, but when you’re angry and paranoid, something is bound to go wrong. American Buffalo, which won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1976 for Best American play, may be a grim portrait of society’s disenfranchised, but scratch the surface, and you may be surprised at the human connection.

Fondren Theatre Workshop's production is directed by Chris Roebuck, and features the talents of Daniel Dauphin, JC Patterson, and Opie Cooper. Their natural, spontaneous-feeling dialogue, coupled with the authentic set decoration and intimate space, makes the audience feel like a voyeur of real life — an eavesdropping customer unnoticed inside "Don's Resale Shop". Staging American Buffalo in the historic Pix/Capri Theatre building in Jackson, Mississippi's Fondren community adds a specially-magical touch to this already-incredible play. Fondren Theatre Workshop's version of American Buffalo is absolutely not to be missed.

NOTE: This play contains frequent mature language which is not recommended for children under 17.
